REWIRED-LIGHTING

White, Enamel Space Heater, Accent Light

As you may have noticed, this piece is a little different than the others.  Whenever I begin a new project, a few things always come to mind right of the bat.  First, I think about how I can create a piece to represent its original purpose and second, how can I use light to accentuate this original purpose.

When I first saw this space heater, I immediately knew I wanted to recreate the glowing heating coils that would've been on this original heater.  Even though the vintage style light bulbs I love to incorporate in most of my pieces have distinct filament designs that would somewhat resemeble heater coils, I knew I woudn't be satisfied with the outcome.  Ideally, I would've loved to use neon tubing, but that wasn't an option, so I decided on the next best thing.  Electroluminescent wire (EL wire).  This EL wire closely resembles neon tubing, but it is 100% flexible and can be used in a variety of applications.

After making loop after loop around the original coil support rods and concealing the the connectors within the heater, this piece turned out exactly how I envisioned.  Although this pieces' main purpose is not to illuminate an entire room, it does provide that iconic, mid-century, neon glow that you would get from any original, true neon sign.
